"I am a regular user of the Hudson Bike Path, running from Christopher to 40th St, cycling to 125th St. There are a number of hazards which, left as they are, will inevitably result in injury to users.

The missing speed bump at Chelsea Piers has resulted in cars not stopping at the path. Drivers are intimidating users who try to pass. I see this regularly.

The Jersey barrier north of the Intrepid which juts out into the path area has been there for as long as I remember. It lies just behind the path moving to the right when going south. The concrete end of this barrier is an extreme hazard which poses a grave head on threat in a constricted zone. If a custom barrier is not fitted to this space, eliminating the danger, someone is going to be seriously injured. I am an experienced cyclist and I have been forced into it a few times due to traffic dynamics.

Areas of standing water due to improper grading of asphalt causes users to suddenly change lanes. When this happens behind a group of users side by side, head on collisions are a possible consequence.

The ability of southbound vehicular traffic on West Street to make right hand turns at will is a constant threat to path users, especially those who are unfamiliar with this danger. I have had a few close calls in this regard even though I am aware of this hazard.

The construction at the 24th St intersection is chaos to both users and cross traffic. Path users can't see oncoming path users, especially when traffic is stopped at the light. Cross traffic can't see path users as they are out of sight. Why can't the path be kept open while this construction is at a stand still?

Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the path. It adds uncounted pleasure to my life. But the job isn't done. Safety is of prime concern. The path must constantly be followed for improvements. One unnecessary accident or death is too many.

And the current solution for the missing Chelsea Piers speed bump is a stop sign for cyclists, which is useless, cars are still intimidating path users. The temporary path leading to the 24th Street intersection from the south now has a yellow dashed dividing line. This is like holding the door open for a blind person so that they can walk into the path of highway. All other hazards are unchanged. With increased path usage, people are going to get hurt.

Intersection

This morning they had one of those big orange barrels on the south side of the intersection. Almost like they are creating an obstacle course for the bikes.

Standing Water

"There may be an opportunity to enlist a far wider community than users of the bike path when it comes to standing water on the path and along side it.

Standing water is where mosquitos breed. Mosquitos spread West Nile Virus and other diseases.

The public health hazard extends far beyond the bicycle path, endangering most of the residents of Manhattan, and perhaps of other boroughs and New Jersey as well.
